How it works
- Choose the chart size and how many squares are blank: 25, 50, 75 or 100 percent.
- Shuffle the headings to stop children from just counting along a row.
- Print it: the answer key is the full chart, which also works as a reference sheet.
Patterns in the chart
The chart is symmetric: the square for 3 × 8 has the same number as 8 × 3, so children only have to learn about half of it. The squares along the diagonal are the square numbers 1, 4, 9, 16 and so on.
Shuffled headings
With the numbers 1 to 12 in a random order along the top and the side, each square has to be worked out on its own. It is a quick test of how well the times tables are known.
